Benefiting from the navigability of the Vendée, the village of Chaix originally developed along the riverside, then gathered itself around the 10th century church. The apse of St. Etienne's church dates from the 11th century. Different stages of construction have given it a slightly irregular look and one curiosity: the axis of the chancel is inclined towards the North.
All around, one can admire some very beautiful houses. In the middle-ages, the parish of Chaix boasted no less than 6 manor houses!
