Ideally situated at the outlet of the Vendée, formerly navigable, Velluire owes its development to the extensive river commerce which began in the middle ages. There remains from that splendid period the 12th Century church dedicated to St. Jean L'Evangeliste.
While it is true that certain 19th Century alterations have somewhat spoilt the monument, its Norman decor remains interesting.
Notice the two capitals of the columns found at the entrance to the choir: one represents a giant and the other Samson overcoming the lion.
